Thousands of people died and the districts were eventually defeated by the Capitol. Twelve of the districts were left unharmed, but was destroyed as a result of being the leaders of the rebellion. To remind the remaining twelve districts not to rebel again, they were forced to offer up in tribute, one young man and woman between the ages of 12-18 to compete in a fight to the death, otherwise known as the Hunger Games. Katniss Everdeen puts the Hunger Games as a way for the Capitol to show their power over the districts. She says that it is like they are saying "Look how we take your children and make them kill each other off and there is nothing you can do. If you try to stop us, we will destroy each and every one of you like we did to District 13."
